What is 404 Tea?

We are a group of individuals who are based in Melbourne, Australia. We specialise in certain types of tea that makes you feel something more. Something extraordinary. Something pure. Tea is not something the average person thinks of when they think of exciting drinks. We believe it is because the average person tends to think of tea bags, or has not tried 'real' tea (don't worry, we understand how pretentious that sounds). Many years ago we discovered the incredible experience of drinking pu-erh (also spelled 'puer', or 'pu'er') tea from the province of Yunnan, China. From then on, we have been drinking this stuff religiously. Now we want to bring this experience to you.

Puerh Tea? What is that?

Puerh is a form of tea produced in the province of Yunnan, China. It is a tea that is revered heavily by many for its distinct characteristics, effects and benefits. Notably, unlike other types of tea, Puerh does not go off. Instead it tends to age like fine wine, with its flavour and quality enhancing and maturing greatly in the process. There are 2 distinct types of puerh tea, which are called raw (sheng) puerh, and ripe (shou) puerh.

  • Young Raw/Sheng is more of a 'green tea' in a sense that it has not yet been matured for a great deal of time (0-3 years). This tea has incredible floral, fruity and sweet notes, with occasional bitter notes.
  • Aged Raw/Sheng is a Raw Sheng that has been aged for quite a few years. It is here that you can see the incredible character development that aging provides. The 'immature' or 'sharp' notes have been rounded out of the tea, leaving a comfortably mellow tasting tea with incredible depth.
  • Ripe/Shou is puerh that has undergone the unique process of fermentation as a way to speed up the process of mimicking the characteristics of Aged Sheng. This provides a thick and deep tea with a rich, mushroom/earthy sweetness.
Puerh tea has one of the most dynamic characteristic range, where region, processing style, and age all bring out unique nuances into every sip.

Cha Qi? How do I Feel it?

The infamous Cha Qi, or 'Tea Energy', can only be described as 'if you know, you know'. A feeling that takes you by surprise, but floods your body with warmth from head to toes, perhaps even providing insight into the feelings of 'zen'. We can look at this in two ways, spiritual and scientific.

  • Spiritually, Cha Qi is described as the 'energy' or 'life force' within the tea leaves. When you drink quality and pure tea, you may feel the 'energy' start to flow within your body. Some may say it places you within a zen-like state, feeling calm, blissful yet focused.
  • Scientifically, there are a few key ingredients within the tea that cause this sensation; being Caffeine, L-Theanine and Catechins. L-Theanine is an amino acid that 'neutralises' the jittery and anxiolitic nature that caffeine tends to provoke, leaving the drinker with a calm yet focused feeling. Catechins are antioxidants that have an affinity for cannabinoid receptors, which may provide especially calming effects.
Cha Qi can present itself in many different types of tea, and different teas can provide Cha Qi to some people but not others, but as always - 'when you know, you know'.
